Colombo

Colombo is the capital of Sri Lanka, where in certain parts of the city modern buildings can be found, but also the original life of Sri Lanka. E.g. you can see a more than one hundred years old clock tower and British colonial buildings. The fort with the Lighthouse Clock Tower is one of the main attractions of the city. This fort is build by the Portuguese.

In the center there are typical, small, independent shops and street markets, which are occasionally alternated with large modern shop centers, where you can buy everything.

The Pettah district is a lively neighborhood with bazaars, where everything is for sale.

A walk on Galle Face Green, a promenade along the beach and a meeting place before sunset for many families.
The many people, who are seen walking in sarongs and saris, give a colorful sight on the streets.

The traffic in Sri Lanka is left driving  and is generally chaotic, certainly in and around Colombo. The vehicles use the klaxon with great regularity and it looks like there no traffic regulation, so caution is advised.
But despite all the busy traffic you can see sometimes a bullock on the street.

The "Full Moon" parade became a bigger spectacle in recent years than the parade of Kandy. Dozens of elephants participate, as well as hundreds of dancers and a lot of musicians. You can make a reservation for a seat for a lot of money, but this is not required, unless you have a problem with standing or walking.

The procession is easily seen from the sidewalk.
